The first time my son saw my new villa, he did not congratulate me.

He stepped through the entrance, looked up at the soaring ceiling, and immediately decided the house should belong to him.

“My wife is going to love living here.”

“It would be wonderful for her.”

My heart softened when I looked at my granddaughter.

Preston’s smile vanished.

Kendra’s tone became sharper.

“That’s interesting. When I lived behind a laundromat, both of you called it being realistic.”

Preston placed his keys on my marble side table as though the transfer of ownership had already happened.

Their lease was ending, he explained. Renting was a waste of money. I should be grateful to have my family living nearby.

“No.”

The single word seemed to echo through the room.

“I would rather she grow up knowing another person’s home is not something she is entitled to take.”

Preston’s face reddened.

“No,” I said. “I think it means I am finally home.”

For several seconds, the room remained silent.

Preston pointed toward me.

Richard’s tone turned sharp.

My son looked at him.

The atmosphere in the room changed.

Richard’s eyes hardened.

Kendra stepped backward.

“No,” Richard said immediately.

Richard became completely still.

Kendra faced Preston.

“You were spying on me?”

“You threatened to take Lila if I didn’t help.”

“She’s my daughter.”

“That’s why I was afraid.”

Detective Alvarez accepted the recorder.

As Kendra continued speaking, her voice grew stronger.

Richard looked at me.
