The argument started halfway through New Year’s dinner, inside the same house where I had spent three years paying bills, replacing appliances, and handling every repair my husband, Jason, claimed he “didn’t have time” to deal with.

His mother, Carol, had moved in six months earlier after selling her condo.

From the beginning, she behaved as though the house belonged to her.

That night, she criticized the food, complained about the music, and finally lost her temper when I asked her not to smoke beside the back door.

“If you don’t like my rules, get out!” she shouted, pointing toward the front hallway.

I looked at Jason.

I could hear Carol complaining behind him.

Carol laughed.

“Jason told me this became marital property when you got married.”

I turned toward him.

He looked uncomfortable.

“I said it was our home.”

“No,” Carol snapped. “You told me you owned half.”

That was when the argument stopped being about the furnace.

Jason finally admitted that he had allowed his mother to believe he was a co-owner because he felt embarrassed that I had purchased the house before meeting him.

Whenever Carol talked about how successful I had been before marriage, Jason said it made him feel “like a guest.”

So instead of correcting her, he built a more comfortable story.

I could barely believe what I was hearing.

Mike finished replacing the control board and came upstairs.

Three days later, Jason asked me to meet him at a coffee shop.
