The lock clicked behind me while my husband stood on the other side of the bedroom door, listening to his mother laugh. I was thirty-eight weeks pregnant, barefoot, and a prisoner inside the house I had paid for.

 

“Julian,” I said, forcing my voice steady. “Open the door.”

His mother, Beatrice, answered instead. “You’ve been dramatic for nine months. A week alone might teach you gratitude.”

 

Through the wood, I heard suitcase wheels rolling across the marble floor.

My husband lowered his voice. “There’s food in the mini-fridge. Don’t make this worse.”
