Beneath the cascading Baccarat crystal chandeliers of the Plaza Hotel’s most exclusive banquet hall, the light fractured into a million blinding, icy shards. The atmosphere was a suffocating cocktail of butter-poached Maine lobster, suffocating layers of Tom Ford cologne, and the relentless, buzzing hum of Manhattan’s elite pretending to tolerate one another.

 

I, Isabella Thornton, stood quietly near the perimeter of the head table. I wore a tailored, slate-gray cocktail dress—expensive enough to belong, but understated enough to render me invisible.
