My attorney opened a blue folder while movers stood frozen beside a mattress on my front lawn.

My son Evan stared at the documents as though they might somehow rescue him.

They did not.

“This deed confirms that your mother remains the sole legal owner of the lake house,” attorney Daniel Mercer said. “No one else has ownership rights, permission to live here, or authority to invite additional residents.”

My daughter-in-law, Sierra, stepped forward.

“Evan will inherit it someday. We’re family.”

Daniel adjusted his glasses.

“You should let him finish reading.”

As Evan continued, confusion turned to disbelief.
