Part 1. The Pool
The first sound after my parents fell into the swimming pool was laughter.

Not loud at first, but scattered across the terrace—nervous, cruel, and cowardly. My mother, Ruth Hayes, came up coughing, her navy dress heavy with water. My father, Daniel, immediately moved to hold her above the surface, his borrowed suit soaked and sagging.

At the edge of the pool stood my future mother-in-law, Victoria Blackwell. Her diamonds glittered in the sun, and one manicured hand still hovered in the air—the same hand she had used to shove my mother backward.

Hundreds of guests watched: executives, politicians, donors, and old-money families. Victoria looked down at my parents and sneered that perhaps the water would wash away the smell of poverty.
