I picked up my nine-year-old daughter, Lily, from my parents’ home after returning from a week-long work trip to Europe. It was late Friday night when we reached our small house in Portland, Oregon. She barely spoke during the drive, but I assumed she was exhausted. At the door, my mother had kissed her forehead over and over, while my father stood behind her with folded arms and a smile that never reached his eyes.

The next morning, I prepared Lily’s favorite breakfast: scrambled eggs, buttered toast, and strawberries sliced into tiny hearts. Usually, she would laugh and immediately steal the largest strawberry.
