PART 1: THE SILENCE
The first sound I heard after my future mother-in-law shoved my parents into the pool was laughter.

The second was silence from the man I was supposed to marry.

Water crashed across the marble terrace. My mother’s blue dress darkened instantly, and my father’s borrowed jacket clung to his shoulders as he caught her beneath the floating rose petals.

Olivia Sterling stood at the edge, diamonds shining at her throat.

“What a miserable, poverty-stricken family,” she sneered. “Perhaps the water will wash away the smell.”

Several guests gasped. Others raised their phones.

I turned to Ethan. In twenty minutes, I was supposed to become his wife. He stared into his champagne as though the bubbles mattered more than my parents.
