When Chloe stepped into the restored barn, she slowly ran a perfectly manicured finger across one of the cherrywood cabinets. Instead of admiring the craftsmanship, she frowned at the faint streak left behind, as though the room had failed a test no one had asked her to administer.

 

Morning sunlight poured through the towering windows, lighting the reclaimed oak flooring, the exposed chestnut beams, and every detail I had spent four years creating. My son, David, stood quietly near the walnut kitchen island with his hands buried in his coat pockets, avoiding my eyes.

 

For years I had imagined this moment.
